Château de Beaufort, Florennes
Florennes, Belgium, Belgium
Château de Beaufort, also known as Florennes Castle, is a historic fortress in Florennes, Belgium, with origins going back to the 9th century when a wooden fortification was first built.
It was replaced by a stone castle in the 10th century and became a stronghold for the Rumigny-Florennes family, vassals of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The castle was extensively damaged during sieges in 1408 and 1430 but was rebuilt and expanded in the early 15th century by Isabella, Duchess of Lorraine, who also developed a large park around it.
Ownership later passed to the House of Glymes-Jodoigne and then the Beaufort-Spontin family in 1771. The castle suffered damage as a result of the French Revolutionary Wars but was retained by the Beaufort-Spontin family after the monarchy's restoration. In the 20th century, the castle served as a Jesuit college and seminary. While much of the original fortress was destroyed or dismantled during the 18th and 19th centuries, some medieval structures like walls and towers still stand, alongside later additions from the Renaissance period.
Today, Château de Beaufort stands as a symbol of the noble legacy and turbulent history of the region.
