Verified Château de Beusdael

Plombières, Belgium, Belgium

Château de Beusdael is a medieval castle in the hamlet of Beusdael, part of the Sippenaeken section of the municipality of Plombières in Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium, close to the Dutch border.

The castle is built in a peaceful valley and is surrounded by a water-filled moat, with the imposing 13th‑century donjon (fortified tower) at its southern end, followed to the north by a 16th–17th‑century residential building with a square tower, and further north by a neo‑Gothic 19th‑century chapel and a small round turret.

The 13th‑century donjon is particularly striking: about 12 m wide, 28 m high, with walls up to 2.5 m thick at the base, and topped by an unusual 17th‑century crowning of a truncated pyramid roof with a bulb and a weather‑vane bearing the arms of Gérard Colyn and his wife.

The site has been a lordship under the Duchy of Limburg since the Middle Ages, successively held by the families of Beusdael, Van Eys, Colyn, Van Hoensbroeck, de Méan and others, and in 1882 it was heavily renovated by Count Florent d’Oultremont, with works by Brussels architect Émile Janlet that added the chapel, round turret and new gatehouse and bridge.
