Château de Braives
Braives, Belgium, Belgium
Château de Braives (also called Château de Marotte) is a private gentleman’s house in the village of Braives, in the municipality of Braives in the province of Liège, Wallonia, Belgium, set in a wooded park traversed by the river Mehaigne.
It was built between 1720 and 1725 on the site of an older fortified castle that was already attested in the 14th century, replacing the medieval stronghold with a more residential “gentilhommière” typical of the Hesbaye countryside. The main building is in brick and Meuse stone, with a triangular fronton surmounted by the arms of Jean‑Philippe‑Joseph baron de Woot de Tinlot and his wife Anne‑Marie de Nassau‑Corroy.
The estate is enclosed by a courtyard with four pavilions built in the second half of the 18th century forming the dependencies, and although it is a private property, visitors are allowed to approach the site and view the château from the entrance gate, but the interior is not open to the public as a museum or daily tourist attraction.
