Verified Château De Corroy-le-Château

Gembloux, Belgium, Belgium

Château De Corroy-le-Château in Gembloux, Belgium, is a well-preserved medieval castle built between 1220 and 1230 by William of Brabant.

It is one of Belgium's best-preserved medieval buildings, notable for its gigantic round towers reminiscent of the design of the Louvre in Paris. The castle was constructed by the Vianden family to protect the southern border of the Duchy of Brabant and was built in phases, including a large rectangular keep and a fortified enclosure.

Over the centuries, it faced several attacks and sieges, including bombardments by French troops in the 16th and 17th centuries, which damaged parts of the structure but led to renovations and adaptations. It passed through the hands of prominent families such as the Nassau-Dillenburgs and was elevated to a county in the late 17th century. Renovations in the 18th century gave it a brighter and more comfortable residential character while maintaining its defensive features.

Today, the castle is a cultural landmark, hosting medieval events and open for tours that offer a glimpse into its rich history, architecture, and importance in regional power struggles.
