Verified Château de Dohan

Bouillon, Belgium, Belgium

Château de Dohan is a historic fortified farmhouse (ferme‑château) in the village of Dohan, part of Bouillon in the province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium, standing on a rocky promontory about 20 metres above the Semois river.

The site was originally a guarded ford on the ancient “voie d’Yvois”, a key route between the Meuse and the Moselle, and the castle was built in the early 17th century, with the present main manor house dating to 1619 and commissioned by Florent Lardenois de Ville, lord of Dohan and captain‑prévôt of Cugnon‑Chassepierre, replacing or replacing in part an earlier lordly residence.

The building is a schist and sandstone structure combining a 17th‑century rectangular logis with a square south‑west corner tower from the original manor and an 18th‑century perpendicular wing added in the style of the earlier openings, while the L‑shaped house encloses a rectangular forecourt separated from the road by a monumental gate door with a triangular pediment bearing the arms of the Duchesne de Ruville‑Thibault family, adorned with garlands and oak leaves, and the complex includes stables, barns and other outbuildings forming a large castral estate with a farm.
