Verified Château de Fayenbois

Liège, Belgium, Belgium

Château de Fayenbois (sometimes spelled Fayembois) is a historic castle in the Jupille-sur-Meuse section of Liège, Belgium, built in 1625 for Guillaume Fayen on land that had belonged to the Church of Liège since 1297.

The building is a rectangular two-storey structure in brick with limestone bands, window surrounds and corner stones, reflecting the Mosan Renaissance style typical of the region, and it features a circular tower attached to the south-east façade that houses the main staircase under a polygonal spire.

Over the centuries the property passed through several families, was later owned by the Diocese of Liège, then by the city of Liège after municipal fusion, and after a long period of severe deterioration it was restored from 1993 to 2000 to regain its 17th-century appearance while conserving some decorative elements from later periods.

Today the castle forms the core of La Clairière de Fayenbois, a retirement home and care facility that also occupies three lower wings built around the main building, and the surrounding 3.4-hectare park together with the larger wooded “Bois de Fayenbois” (about 26 hectares) form a classified public green site frequently used for walking and nature.
