Château de Forêt
Trooz, Belgium, Belgium
Château de Forêt, located in Trooz, Belgium, is a striking 19th-century neo-Tudor style castle built in 1860 by Marquis Oswald du Chasteler to replace an older medieval fortress on the site.
The castle stands out for its rare architectural style in Belgium, featuring a rectangular layout with four corner turrets and numerous windows, set within a large forested estate. Over the years, it has witnessed both grandeur and tragedy, including a notorious murder in 1889 known as the "Moulbaix Affair," and periods of restoration after fires.
The castle was later inherited by the Ursel family, but after the death of the Count of Ursel in 2005, it fell into disuse due to family disputes over ownership, remaining largely abandoned for many years. Despite its state of neglect, the interior retains much of its original furniture and decor, with marble halls, grand staircases, and numerous rooms that evoke the atmosphere of aristocratic life.
In recent years, there have been efforts to restore the castle, with plans to convert it into a banquet hall and guest accommodation, though its future remains uncertain as restoration work continues.
