Verified Château de la Louveterie

Limbourg, Belgium, Belgium

The Château de la Louveterie is an elegant former hunting lodge and château situated in the hamlet of La Louveterie, south of Hèvremont in the Bois de Hèvremont, within the municipality of Limbourg in the province of Liège, Belgium.

The estate’s origins lie in a land grant from Charles the Bold in 1465 to the town of Limbourg, allowing its citizens to graze sheep and gather wood in the nearby wooded area; in the late 18th century, textile manufacturer François‑Xavier Simonis, captain of the “Louveterie” hunting society that hunted wolves, sold part of this land and in 1783 commissioned the original building, a square two‑storey hunting pavilion later called the Pavillon or Maison de Chasse and known as the Louveterie.

In 1880–1881 the property was enlarged and transformed into a more substantial château, maintaining its function as a hunting seat and country residence, and through the 19th and 20th centuries it was inhabited by various families, including the de Biolley and later an English owner named Oliver, before falling into neglect and abandonment for a number of years.
