Verified Château de la Petite Flémal’

Flémalle, Belgium, Belgium

Château de la Petite Flémal' (also called the communal château of Flémalle) is a historic pleasure castle in Flémalle-Haute, in the municipality of Flémalle, Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium.

It was originally built around 1614 for Michel Valkener, a receiver at St-Pierre Collegiate Church in Liège, on land that once belonged to the old place called “Petite Flémal’,” and between 1710 and 1738 the building was enlarged and extended with a second wing modeled on the first under Marie-Françoise de Bonhomme, giving it its present symmetrical layout of two main wings enclosing courtyard space.

Since 1938 the château has housed municipal administrative services of Flémalle, and a more modern wing was added in 1984 that extends toward the park, while the interior remains largely reserved for official use and is only open to the public by prior appointment for groups of at least ten people on weekdays.

What makes the site especially notable for visitors is its large, freely accessible public park, which has evolved from an old orchard and vegetable garden into a beautifully flowered landscape divided into an Italian garden with vibrant parterres, a French garden with a mosaic roundabout, and an English-style landscaped area where water and rocks imitate natural scenery, making it a popular place for walks, relaxation and wedding photography.
