Château de Lagrange-Monrepos
France, France
Château de Lagrange-Monrepos is a historic castle located in the commune of Nérac in the Lot-et-Garonne department of France.
Originally a medieval fortress, it was rebuilt around 1550 by Henry I of Albret, King of Navarre, who is said to have given it to his mistress Marianne Alespée. The castle features a military design with six towers, some equipped with loopholes for firearms used during the French Wars of Religion. It combines fortified elements with Renaissance architectural details, including stone crosses and moulded frames opening onto the courtyard and valley of the Baïse river.
The château is privately owned and not open to the public. Recognized as a historic monument since 1990 and classified in 1991, several parts including the entrance staircase, towers, outbuildings, and dovecote are protected. The castle stands as a symbol of medieval power and Renaissance refinement in southwestern France.
