Château de Merdorp
Hannut, Belgium, Belgium
Château de Merdorp is the former castle estate in the small, isolated village of Merdorp, part of the municipality of Hannut in the Hesbaye region of the Liège province of Belgium, whose main residential building has disappeared and today leaves behind only a distinctive group of 18th-century towers and walls that form a protected monument.
The remains consist of three main turret-like structures linked by part of an old enclosing wall: a square corner tower with two rounded sides on the street, a semi-circular open tower set into the wall, and two tall brick towers, one of which functioned as a dovecote (colombier) marked by a semi-circular entrance, all topped with slate or stone spires and crowns in the characteristic regional style.
The site lies within the former comté of Namur under the bailiwick of Wasseiges, and the castle domain once included the château farm that has been converted into a hotel, reflecting the role of such Hesbaye estates as combined noble residences and agricultural centres in a landscape dominated by grain and sugar beet cultivation.
