Verified Château de Montquintin

Rouvroy, Belgium, Belgium

Montquintin Castle is the ruins of a medieval feudal castle in the village of Montquintin, part of Rouvroy in the Gaume region of the province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium.

It stands on a prominent hill (a “village‑colline”) at about 324 metres, overlooking the valley of the Ton, and was originally built in the 11th century by Louis II, Count of Chiny, to defend the southern border of his county, later developing into a quadrilateral or trapezoidal fortress with four corner towers under the Latour family from 1255 and subsequent owners such as the Suys family.

The castle was modernised in the 18th century and used as a retreat by Jean‑Nicolas de Hontheim, an auxiliary bishop of Trier, who bought it after revolutionary French forces had burnt it; it was later rebuilt by his nephew, but a fire in 1869 again reduced the main residence to ruins, leaving only parts of the walls, two of the four corner towers, a vaulted cellar and a 17th‑century pigeon house beside a former farm.

The site is not generally open to visitors except during special conservation events and volunteer restoration campaigns organized by the Kélyddon foundation each August, but the surrounding area offers panoramic views over the Gaume countryside and its three cuestas, making the hill and ruins a notable landmark and photo spot in the southern Gaume.
