Verified Château de Somal

Somme-Leuze, Belgium, Belgium

The Château de Somal, also called the château‑ferme de Somal, is a historic, listed castle‑farm in the hamlet of Somal, part of Heure‑en‑Famenne in the municipality of Somme‑Leuze, province of Namur, Belgium.

It stands on a slight rise overlooking the valley of the Ruisseau de la Somme, a tributary of the Ourthe, with two ponds linked by a small channel to its south and a 17th‑century chapel of Saint‑Roch about 100 metres to its north. The oldest parts of the site date to the 14th century, but the main manor house was built or rebuilt in the 16th century by the Masbourg family.

The manor is a near‑square building of about 15 metres per side, built mainly in sandstone with limestone around the openings, and flies four storeys under a steep slate roof pierced by dormers, crowned by a circular tower at the north‑west corner and a projecting south‑east corner that resembles a square four‑storey tower, while the farm includes a square four‑storey tower and a covered gatehouse with a round‑arched entrance.

Classified as protected heritage in 1980 together with the Saint‑Roch chapel and the surrounding grounds, the complex is now used as a residential building and reception halls for private events, preserving its distinctive castle‑farm character in the Famenne countryside.
