Verified Château de Thozée

Mettet, Belgium, Belgium

Château de Thozée is a 19th‑century neo‑classical château in the village of Thozée, within the municipality of Mettet in the province of Namur, Belgium.

It was originally the country estate of Félicien Rops, a famous Namur‑born painter and engraver, who lived and worked there between about 1852 and 1874, using the peaceful countryside setting as both a retreat and an artistic laboratory. The château sits in a wooded park beside a small lake, once home to a formal garden that Rops transformed into a more naturalistic, botanically rich landscape.

Today the domain is cared for by the Fonds Félicien Rops, which maintains it as a heritage site and creative center, hosting exhibitions, residencies, and cultural events while preserving its intimate 19th‑century atmosphere and Rops’s former engraving studio.
