Verified Château de Wodémont

Dalhem, Belgium, Belgium

Château de Wodémont (also known as Walberg Castle or Château de Neufchâteau) is a fortified manor house just east of the village of Mortroux, part of the municipality of Dalhem in the province of Liège, Wallonia, Belgium, situated on a hill near the Berwinne river overlooking the wooded and field landscape of the Pays de Herve.

Its history goes back to the 11th century, and the name Wodémont (Waldemonte) is recorded in a Latin document from 1143, with the original rectangular tower probably built in the 11th or 12th century as a defensive stronghold for the Duchy of Limburg, guarding the border between the County of Dalhem and the duchy.

The castle later belonged to various noble families, including the Waldemont and later Wodémont families, then the Van Gulpen and Hoen‑Neufchâteau line, and from 1841 to the De Borchgrave d’Altena family, while the present buildings combine sandstone and limestone with a southern wing added in the 17th century and an eastern wing built in 1860, giving it a mix of medieval and later residential architecture.

During the Second World War, the château was first occupied by German troops and then by American forces during the Battle of the Bulge, leaving visible traces on the building, and today it remains a private residence and occasionally hosts creative retreats and workshops, making it a quiet, historic landmark rather than a regularly open museum or tourist castle.
