Château du Grand-Geroldseck
Haegen, France, France
Château du Grand-Geroldseck is a medieval castle ruin located near Haegen in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, overlooking the Saverne area and the northern Vosges Mountains.
Founded in the early 12th century by the Lords of Geroldseck, it was built to protect the lands of the nearby Abbey of Marmoutier and served as both a noble residence and a defensive fortress. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and modified, particularly during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Its design combined residential buildings with strong fortifications, reflecting the dual role of a medieval seigneurial castle.
Today, visitors can see impressive remains, including a large square keep with walls about three meters thick, the cellars of the former residence, and parts of the barbican and defensive walls. Listed as a French historic monument since 1898, the castle is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Its hilltop location offers beautiful views of the surrounding forests, valleys, and neighboring castle sites.
