Château d'Ultrera is a historic ruined fortress perched on a rocky peak in the Albères Mountains near Sorède in the Pyrénées-Orientales region of southern France.

Although the castle is physically located within the commune of Argelès-sur-Mer, it has long been closely associated with Sorède and overlooks the Roussillon plain and the Mediterranean coast. The site has ancient origins and was an important strategic stronghold used to monitor routes between Roussillon and Catalonia.

Much of the remaining structure dates from the Visigothic period, and the castle is first mentioned in historical records in the 7th century, making it one of the region’s oldest fortified sites. Today, only ruins remain, but the castle is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Visitors are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Albères mountains.

The Canigou massif, the Roussillon plain, and the Mediterranean coastline. The château is also linked to the nearby hermitage of Notre-Dame-du-Château, adding cultural and religious significance to this remarkable historic landmark.
