Verified Château-ferme d'Anthisnes

Anthisnes, Belgium, Belgium

The Château‑ferme d’Anthisnes, also known as the Ferme abbatiale Saint‑Laurent, is a large former abbey farm and fortified manor in the village of Anthisnes in the province of Liège, Wallonia, Belgium, now converted into social housing and recognised as an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia.

It dates from the 18th century, with a 1748 eastern wing, and was built in the traditional local style of the Condroz, using stone and brick, and includes a notable round tower overlooking the property, a central courtyard, and a gatehouse with a passageway, forming a harmonious quadrilateral ensemble of farm buildings and a residential wing.

One of its wings incorporates the former 10th‑century church of Saint‑Maximin, whose interior walls preserve early medieval frescoes that have been listed as exceptional Walloon heritage since 2009, making the site not only a monumental example of a rural farmhouse but also a rare repository of medieval religious art.

The estate ceased its agricultural function in 1977, and in the 2010s it was completely restored and adapted into about twenty social‑housing units, while its historic character and architectural unity have been preserved, ensuring that the Château‑ferme d’Anthisnes remains a visible and protected landmark in the Condroz landscape.
