Château d’Argenteau (often loosely called “Château Fort d’Argenteau”) is a historic castle on a rocky spur above the village of Argenteau, in the commune of Visé in eastern Belgium, close to the Meuse River and the border with the Netherlands.

Its story begins around the year 1000, when a medieval fort was built on this strategical rock to protect the lower Meuse valley against Viking raids and later invasions, and the site was sometimes described as “the island in the clouds” because of its elevated, isolated position.

The original fortress was destroyed in the late 17th century by French troops under Louis XIV during campaigns in the region, and the present château was built in 1683 on the same rock, later heavily modified in the 18th century in a classical style and becoming the residence of the noble Mercy‑Argenteau family, whose members included famous figures such as the naturalist Placide‑Joseph and the composer Louise de Mercy‑Argenteau.

Over the centuries the castle served as a noble home, a cultural landmark, and a symbol of local heritage, and today it stands amid a large park with remarkable trees, including a 200‑year‑old cedar of Lebanon, overlooking the Meuse valley. Recently, the site has been approved for conversion into a luxury resort and hotel with around 55–71 rooms, restaurants, wellness facilities, and event spaces, with work planned to preserve the château’s façades, interior heritage, chapel and library as well as the surrounding park and its notable trees, and an opening targeted for 2029.
