Verified Château Fort de Montaigle

Onhaye, Belgium, Belgium

Château Fort de Montaigle is a ruined medieval castle in the village of Falaën, part of the municipality of Onhaye in the province of Namur, Wallonia, Belgium, perched on a dramatic rocky spur at the confluence of the Molignée and Flavion rivers.

The site was first fortified in prehistoric times, then used by a Belgo-Roman garrison during the Late Roman period, and later occupied by a castel in the early 9th century (around 900) under the lords of Faing, whose name gave the estate its identity for centuries.

The main ruined structures visible today date from the early 14th century, when the original fortress was rebuilt and greatly strengthened as a powerful stronghold under Burgundian control, forming a large square building with thick walls, defensive towers, and a complex network of moats and ditches adapted to the steep rock.

The castle fell into ruin after it was destroyed by the troops of Henry II of France in 1554 during the wars between France and the Habsburgs; it was no longer rebuilt and instead became a romantic ruin, its towers and walls slowly overgrown while preserving a striking silhouette against the wooded valleys.
