Chateau Hombroux
Ans, Belgium, Belgium
The Château de Hombroux, also called Ferme de Hombroux or château‑ferme de Hombroux, is a historic farm‑château located in the old hamlet of Hombroux in Alleur, a section of the municipality of Ans near Liège, Belgium.
It originated in the Middle Ages as a grange (farm building) used to manage lands owned by local ecclesiastical authorities, and from the 14th century until the end of the Ancien Régime it belonged to the Cistercian abbey of Val‑Benoît, which acquired the property in the 13th century.
The present buildings were erected in 1730 under Anne Jamar de Montfort, abbess of Val‑Benoît, and form a compact, homogeneous ensemble arranged around a square courtyard, built in the Mosan Renaissance style with brick and stone. The site was sold by the abbey during the French Revolution on 6 November 1797.
Later passed through private owners, and in 1963 was acquired by the University of Liège; since then it has been converted into residential apartments and office spaces, and is no longer open to visitors as a private property. The château‑ferme and its surrounding grounds have been protected as a monument and as a site, first in 1978 and then with successive extensions in 1986 and 1991, ensuring its status as a listed heritage property in the province of Liège.
