The Château Saroléa in Cheratte, a section of the town of Visé in Liège province, Belgium, is a major 17th‑century Mosan (Maasland) manor house built in 1643 for Gilles de Saroléa, seigneur of Cheratte, and inhabited for centuries by the Saroléa family, who were deeply involved in local coal mining and the development of the Hasard mine.

The building is constructed in brick with limestone and tuffstone string courses, corner bands and window surrounds, and shows the typical features of Mosan Renaissance architecture: crossed windows, straight lintels, arista‑banding, slate ridge‑tiles, and a distinctive square corner turret with a bulbous roof, plus decorative elements such as monogrammed gate panels with the crowned “GDS” initials of Gilles de Saroléa.

After the 19th‑century expansion of coal mining at Hasard, the château was used in connection with the mine, notably as the residence of the mine director and later as an infirmary and hospital, and it remained in private hands until it fell into severe decay, with the interior cannibalised and the gardens, once an arboretum of rare species, neglected.

The property was classified as a historic monument and site in 1978, and in 2018 it was sold to a Dutch company for a very low price, with the obligation to restore it, while the city of Visé has discussed using a Community Land Trust model to redevelop it and preserve the building as part of Cheratte’s industrial and architectural heritage.
