Châteaubriant is a historic town in western France's Loire-Atlantique department, about 350 km southwest of Paris and midway between Nantes and Rennes, serving as a sub-prefecture with around 12,000 residents in a region blending Brittany and Anjou influences.

Emerging in the 11th century around a motte-and-bailey castle built by Brient de Bretagne near the Chère River, it evolved into a medieval stronghold with walls, towers, and a fair established in 1050, later transforming in the Renaissance era under figures like Françoise de Dinan with elegant palaces, galleries, and gardens added to the fortress.

Today, the standout Château de Châteaubriant merges its original 12th-14th century keep, chapel, and defenses with Renaissance wings, alongside half-timbered medieval streets, an 11th-century church, WWII resistance memorials, and a vibrant cattle market culture.
