Cognée’s Castle
Villers-la-Ville, Belgium, Belgium
Cognée’s Castle (French: Château de Cognée, also called Château‑ferme de Cognée) is an 18th‑century manor house with a farm complex in the hamlet of Marbais, part of the commune of Villers‑la‑Ville in Walloon Brabant, Belgium, originally a dependent holding of the Benedictine Abbey of Villers‑la‑Ville and exploited from the 17th century onwards under the name of Cognée.
The present building, in Louis XVI style, was erected in the 18th century by local nobility and later became the residence of the Dumont de Chassart family, who were prominent landowners and industrialists in the region with large sugar, distilling and malting enterprises, and the estate remained in their hands for many decades.
The castle is set in a vast park that includes one of the largest sweet‑cherry (marronnier) trees in the country and is approached along a drive lined with 44 tilleul trees that are more than 150 years old, creating a grand, tree‑framed entrance to the property.
Today the château‑ferme is a private residence and not normally open to the public, but the house and grounds are offered for event rentals such as weddings and other celebrations, and visitors can at least view the building from the outside and from the surrounding paths, appreciating its symmetrical Louis XVI façade, its integration with the agricultural buildings, and its quiet, wooded setting close to the famous ruins of Abbaye de Villers.
