Colombières is a small rural commune in the Calvados department of Normandy in northwestern France. It lies about 20 kilometers west of Bayeux and near Isigny-sur-Mer, within the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park, an area known for its scenic wetlands and countryside. The village has a population of around 206 residents and covers roughly 10.6 square kilometers. Agriculture plays an important role in the local economy, and the surrounding landscape is characterized by fields, waterways, and traditional Norman farmland. Colombières is best known for the Château de Colombières, a historic medieval fortress located close to the D-Day landing beaches. The château is one of the area's most notable landmarks and is sometimes called “La Vigie des Marais” (The Marsh Lookout). During World War II, the village was liberated by Allied forces on 9 June 1944, and General Omar Bradley established a headquarters in the château. Today, Colombières is valued for its quiet rural atmosphere, historical heritage, and proximity to important Normandy cultural and wartime sites.
