Culatra Island, or Ilha da Culatra, is a long, narrow barrier island in the Ria Formosa lagoon system just south of Faro and Olhão on the Algarve coast of Portugal.

It is car‑free and reachable only by ferry or private boat, with a small population spread across three traditional fishing villages that give it a relaxed, off‑the‑beaten‑path feel. The island is about 6 kilometers long and has a wide, fine‑sand beach facing the Atlantic that runs almost end‑to‑end, backed by protective dunes and wooden walkways, and it carries a Blue Flag for clean water and safe bathing.

Visitors come for the calm, clear waters good for swimming and snorkeling, simple beach‑bar restaurants serving fresh seafood, and a peaceful atmosphere away from the busy resort towns, while locals still rely heavily on fishing and shellfish culture alongside growing eco‑friendly tourism.
