Currency Creek Arboretum
Currency Creek, Australia, Australia
The Currency Creek Arboretum, located near the small town of Currency Creek in South Australia about one hour south of Adelaide, is a specialist eucalypt research centre and arboretum that boasts the world's largest collection of eucalypt species.
Established in 1992 by eucalypt expert Dean Nicolle, who selected this site for its specific soil conditions and began the first plantings in 1993, the 32-hectare property contains over 900 to 1,000 species and subspecies of eucalypts (genera Angophora, Eucalyptus, and Corymbia) with more than 8,000 to 10,000 individual trees.
This is almost double the number of eucalypt taxa grown on any other single site elsewhere, making it the only place in the world where visitors can see over 90 percent of Australia's eucalypt species in one spot. The arboretum's main purpose is research into Australia's most dominant natural group of plants, with complete documentation of each specimen maintained through herbarium collections stored in Adelaide, Canberra, and Perth for scientific research.
Visitors can explore the arboretum during scheduled open days with guided tours by Dean Nicolle, and each plant in the collection originates from seeds gathered from wild populations with GPS-marked collection points.
