De Hoop Nature Reserve is a large, remote coastal reserve in the Western Cape, located about 3 hours east of Cape Town near Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, and is accessed via the Malgas turn‑off on the R319 before turning onto a 35 km gravel road to the gate.

Covering roughly 34,000 hectares of limestone fynbos, rolling sand dunes, and the internationally important De Hoop Vlei (a Ramsar‑listed wetland), the reserve is part of the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas UNESCO World Heritage Site and is managed by CapeNature as one of the largest natural areas under its care. The reserve is best known for its outstanding land‑based whale watching: from about May to November, up to 500–600 Southern Right Whales use De Hoop Marine Protected Area as a breeding and nursery ground.

Visitors can watch them from the sand dunes and coastal cliffs, often with the whales coming very close to shore. Beyond whales, De Hoop protects a rich mix of wildlife, including the rare bontebok (the only significant population in the province), Cape mountain zebra, eland, and the Western Cape’s last breeding colony of Cape Vultures on the Potberg Mountains, as well as more than 260 recorded bird species, making it a prized destination for birders and nature lovers.

The landscape combines rugged coastline with long sandy beaches, turquoise rock pools, wetlands, and mountainous fynbos, offering opportunities for hiking, cycling, marine walks, and snorkeling, and including several trails such as the coastal Klipspringer and Vlei Trails and the famous 5‑day Whale Trail, a slack‑packing route that moves along the coast with views of whales, dunes, and fynbos.
