De Klee Castle
Belgium, Belgium
De Klee Castle, officially Kasteel De Klee, is a small 20th‑century “castle” in Kuttekoven, a village near Borgloon in the Belgian province of Limburg, built between 1904 and 1907 in an eclectic style with clear neo‑baroque features.
It was commissioned by Baroness Sneyers‑d’Attenhoven, who wanted a fashionable residence that combined the look of a noble castle with the comforts of a modern country house, giving the building a romantic, rather medieval appearance despite its modern date. The house is set on a modest plot and is recognisable for its symmetrical brick façade, rounded corner turret with a slender spire, and a composition of bay windows, pilasters and ornamental stonework that create a richly detailed but compact “castle” rather than a fortified stronghold.
Unlike the medieval motte castles and strategic border fortresses common in Limburg, De Klee was conceived as a private residence and estate, with surrounding gardens and a small park typical of the early‑20th‑century “projection of aristocracy” that many Belgian families sought through new castles on the countryside.
