Verified Deulin Castle

Hotton, Belgium, Belgium

Deulin Castle (French: Château de Deulin, also called Château de Harlez) is an elegant 18th‑century manor house in the small village of Deulin, part of the commune of Hotton in the Luxembourg province of Wallonia, Belgium.

It was commissioned in 1758 by Guillaume‑Joseph de Harlez and built between 1758 and 1770 by him and his son Simon‑Joseph de Harlez, in a classic U‑shaped plan of whitewashed brick and blue stone with slate roofs, a separate main wing (corps de logis) and two pavilions surrounding an honour courtyard, and it stands on a hill overlooking the village and the valley of the Ourthe river.

The castle was the seat of the lordship of Fronville during the Ancien Régime and has remained in the hands of the de Harlez de Deulin family since its construction, passing through successive generations who still live there today. Its interior is sumptuously decorated with Rococo stucco work by François‑Joseph Dukers and neo‑classical paintings by Jean‑Dieudonné Deneux, and the grounds include an 18th‑century walled garden later transformed into a French garden, a landscaped park with trees from the second half of the 19th century, and a seigniorial chapel dedicated to Saint Remacle with a baroque altar and stucco decoration.

The exterior and interior of the building are listed as exceptional cultural heritage of Wallonia, and the estate is occasionally used for exhibitions, product launches, weddings and other events; groups of 10 or more can book guided visits with the possibility to walk through the gardens at the end of the tour, while the castle itself is mainly a private residence rather than a fully open tourist museum.
