The Dogon Villages of the Bandiagara Area in the Mopti Region are among the most fascinating cultural landscapes in Africa. Built along the dramatic Bandiagara Escarpment, these villages are known for their distinctive mud-brick houses, granaries, shrines, and communal meeting places that blend harmoniously with the cliffs and sandstone plateau. The villages are home to the Dogon people, whose rich traditions include elaborate mask dances, ceremonies, ancestor veneration, and unique architectural practices that have been preserved for centuries. The area also contains remains of earlier peoples, including the Tellem, whose ancient cliffside dwellings and burial caves can still be seen today. Recognized as the Cliff of Bandiagara (Land of the Dogons), the region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989 because of its exceptional cultural, archaeological, and natural value. Its striking scenery and living traditions make it one of Mali's most celebrated heritage destinations.
