Douai is a historic town in northern France, located on the Scarpe River about 40 kilometers from Lille and near the Belgian border. It has roots dating back to a probable Roman fortress in the 4th century and became part of the County of Flanders from the 10th century.

Throughout its history, Douai flourished as a textile market center during the Middle Ages and was ruled by the counts of Flanders, the Dukes of Burgundy, the Habsburgs, and Spain before being captured by France in 1667. The town suffered major destruction during the sieges of the early 18th century and significant damage in both World Wars but has been rebuilt and integrated fully into France since the early 18th century.

It is notable for its impressive Gothic belfry and historical university originally founded in 1562. Today, Douai maintains a vibrant cultural scene and industrial economy centered on automobile manufacturing and retains architectural heritage such as its restored Notre-Dame Church and museums showcasing local art and history.
