“East Fort” in South Africa usually refers to one of two historic military sites, so it is important to distinguish between them: the East Fort Battery in Hout Bay on the Cape Peninsula and the East Fort (also called the Eastern Redoubt) on Strubenkop in Pretoria.

The Hout Bay East Fort is a late‑18th‑century coastal fortification built in 1782 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), together with West Fort and two other batteries, to defend the Cape against a possible naval attack from the south, and it is now a ruined stone blockhouse and gun battery site located along Chapman’s Peak Drive, part of the Table Mountain National Park, with a restored battery of eight 18‑pounder guns that are still ceremonially fired on special occasions.

Located on a hillside overlooking Hout Bay, the East Fort Battery site covers about 6.4 hectares, is split by Chapman’s Peak Drive, and includes four ruined buildings that could theoretically be restored, as well as hiking trails that lead up toward Noordhoek Peak and down toward the sea, offering dramatic views and a quiet, historic atmosphere for visitors interested in Cape military history and landscape.

By contrast, the Pretoria East Fort was the largest British fortification built in the city during the Anglo‑Boer War (1899–1902); it was erected on Strubenkop in Lynnwood between June and July 1900 by British troops including the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, under the supervision of balloon‑section officers, and was constructed of stone with corrugated iron roofing and walls, loopholed for defense, and armed with a five‑inch navy cannon, with the fort later manned by the Volunteer Company of the 2nd Hampshire Regiment.
