Emerald Botanic Gardens
Emerald, Queensland, Australia, Australia
Emerald Botanic Gardens, located on the banks of the Nogoa River in Emerald, Queensland, is the only botanic gardens in Queensland's Central Western District and spans 42 hectares (about 100 acres) of lush tropical paradise that provides a refreshing green oasis in the arid outback country.
Established in 1987 by the Emerald Shire Council and local residents Lawrie and Myra Stanton, the gardens feature 12 different themed plant communities representing native regional flora, including a rainforest section, rose garden, bush chapel, and various eco-zone environments from throughout Queensland.
Visitors can explore six kilometres of walking and bike tracks that wind through different environments leading to picnic areas, playgrounds, a hedge maze, sculptures, a working windmill that pumps water into a reedy lagoon, BBQ facilities, and a small lake where ducks and other wildlife can be seen. The gardens are meticulously maintained, offer plenty of shady trees for relaxation, have well-kept amenities including large car parks, and are a popular spot for weddings, photo shoots, and even free camping under the nearby bridge for up to 20 hours.
Located just a short distance from Emerald's town centre with easy access via two bridges spanning both sides of the river, the gardens provide weary outback travellers and local residents alike with a peaceful retreat to enjoy nature, fish in the river, take a quick dip, or simply unwind among the abundant wildlife.
