Épinal is a town in northeastern France and the capital of the Vosges department, situated on the Moselle River about 60 kilometers south of Nancy. The town developed around a 10th-century monastery and has a rich history, having been under the control of the kings of France, dukes of Lorraine, and integrated into France in 1766.

Known as a major political and business center in the Middle Ages, Épinal later became famous for its colorful prints and woodcarvings produced since the late 18th century, earning it the title "World Capital of Images." The town features medieval remnants such as castle ruins, Gothic architecture like the Saint-Maurice Basilica, and historic squares including the Place des Vosges.

It also has significant fortifications, parks, gardens, and a communal forest with an arboretum. Épinal played a role in 20th-century defense efforts and is connected by rail to major cities such as Paris and Strasbourg. Today, it combines cultural heritage with natural beauty, attracting visitors to its museums, historic sites, and pleasant outdoor spaces.
