Étampes is a historic town in the Essonne department of the Île-de-France region, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Paris.
With nearly 27,000 residents, it is the main urban center of southern Essonne and serves as an important administrative, economic, and cultural hub for the surrounding area. Known as a former royal fortified town, Étampes has a rich medieval heritage, including historic churches, the famous Tour de Guinette, and many well-preserved architectural landmarks.
The town has long been an important crossroads between Paris, Orléans, Chartres, and Fontainebleau. Étampes is situated in the valley of the Juine River and is crossed by several waterways. Its many former canals and water mills earned it the nickname “Little Venice,” while nearby parks and natural landscapes add to its appeal.
