Created during the French Revolution in 1790 from parts of historic Orléanais, Maine, and Île-de-France provinces, it spans about 5,900 square kilometers with a population of around 433,000 as of 2023, featuring Chartres as its prefecture and subprefectures in Châteaudun, Dreux, and Nogent-le-Rotrou.
Known as the heart of Beauce farmland and gateway to Le Perche natural park, it boasts Chartres Cathedral's Gothic stained glass—a UNESCO site—plus Renaissance châteaux, rolling wheat fields, and easy access to Paris just 90 km northeast.
