Excideuil
Dordogne Department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Excideuil is a historic town in the Dordogne department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, situated on a limestone plateau between the rivers Isle and Auvézère, with the river Loue running through it.
The town grew around a 10th-century monastery, retaining medieval roots seen in its gothic church and old houses from the 16th century. It prospered notably after being granted tax exemption by Louis XI in 1482, along with wealth from a local iron mining industry, which is reflected in its well-preserved architecture and elegant houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
A prominent feature is the Château d’Excideuil, perched on a rocky outcrop, which famously resisted attacks by Richard the Lionheart on three occasions, though it is not open to the public. The town is also known for its lively Thursday market, reputed to be the busiest in the region, and includes historic buildings such as a hospital that was originally a 12th-century convent.
Excideuil’s blend of medieval heritage, vibrant market life, and scenic setting in the Périgord Vert region makes it a notable destination in southwestern France.
