Fort de la Chartreuse
Liège, Belgium, Belgium
Fort de la Chartreuse is a 19th-century fortress overlooking the Amercœur neighborhood in Liège, Belgium, constructed between 1817 and 1823 by the Dutch on Mont Cornillon hill to defend against French threats, replacing an earlier Carthusian monastery site.
Decommissioned in 1891 after newer forts rendered it obsolete, it served as barracks before becoming a German prison during both World Wars, where 49 Belgian patriots were executed in WWI, and later a U.S. military hospital in 1944. Demilitarized in 1981 and acquired by the city, its galleries and green spaces now host wildlife, with ongoing conservation efforts preserving this historic landmark amid panoramic Meuse Valley views.
