Verified Fort Murray

South Africa , South Africa

Fort Murray, located on the Cape Frontier in Eastern Cape, South Africa, was built in 1848 by the Royal Engineers during the period of British Kaffraria. It replaced an earlier fort from 1835 near Mount Coke and served as a key military stronghold during the conflicts between British colonial forces and the Xhosa people.

The fort was constructed from locally sourced stone, featuring a square layout with loopholes and thatched roofs, making it similar to other forts of the time like Fort White. It was occupied by British troops including the 72nd Regiment and later by the Kaffrarian police, many of whom were recruited from local Xhosa populations. The fort played a role in the British colonial administration and civil governance of the region, standing as an effort to maintain order through both military and civil means.

Although it was never directly attacked, Fort Murray served as a base for military and policing activities until the late 19th century, after which it gradually fell into disuse and was eventually listed as abandoned by 1967. Efforts were made to preserve the site in the 20th century, but it remains a ruin that offers a glimpse into the colonial frontier era of South Africa.
