Fort Nottingham is a small historic fort and village in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands of South Africa, established in 1856 as a British military outpost to protect settlers in the Drakensberg foothills from San (Bushman) livestock raids.
A detachment of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regiment, the Sherwood Foresters, built the stone fort, which is one of the oldest surviving military buildings in the province and later became the nucleus of a tiny rural settlement. The fort now houses the Fort Nottingham Museum, where displays explain the frontier conflicts, early settler life and San rock art, and it stands near the Fort Nottingham Nature Reserve, so visitors experience both cultural history and surrounding grassland and forest landscapes.
