Fort Rinella, located in Kalkara on the eastern side of Malta’s Grand Harbour, is a Victorian coastal battery built by the British Empire between 1878 and 1886 to defend the harbor from powerful enemy warships.

Although commonly called a fort, it was originally designed as an artillery battery centered around a single massive weapon. The site is famous for housing the Armstrong 100-ton Gun, one of the largest muzzle-loading cannons ever built and one of only a few surviving examples in the world. The gun could fire enormous shells over long distances and represented the cutting edge of military technology in the late 19th century.

Today, Fort Rinella is a living-history museum where visitors can explore restored military installations, underground chambers, and exhibits on Malta’s defensive past. Demonstrations, historical reenactments, and the impressive 100-ton gun make it one of the island’s most distinctive historical attractions.
