Verified Fort St. Elmo

Valletta, Malta

Fort St. Elmo is a historic star-shaped fortress located at the tip of the Valletta peninsula, where it guards the entrances to both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour.

Built by the Order of Saint John in the 16th century, it occupies one of the most strategic positions in Malta and has played a key role in the island’s defense for centuries. The fort is best known for its heroic resistance during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, when a small garrison held out against overwhelming Ottoman forces for nearly a month. Although the fort eventually fell, its defense helped delay the attackers and contributed significantly to Malta’s eventual victory.

Today, Fort St. Elmo houses the National War Museum, which showcases thousands of years of Maltese military history, including exhibits from the Second World War. With its impressive fortifications, sweeping sea views, and deep historical significance, it is one of Malta’s most important heritage sites.
