Forte de São Fernando, located in the parish of Santa Cruz near Gaula on Madeira Island, Portugal, is a historically significant coastal fort built in the 18th century.

Its primary purpose was to defend the region from pirate and corsair attacks that were frequent during that period. Strategically positioned overlooking Santa Cruz Beach, it allowed early observation of potential threats to the coastline.

The fort underwent restoration during the liberal struggles by sergeant-major Paulo Dias de Almeida and got its name from an old chapel dedicated to Saint Fernando that once stood there, although the chapel no longer exists. This fort stands as an important reminder of Madeira’s defensive history and its efforts to protect local populations.

Today, it remains a notable heritage monument, offering visitors insights into the island’s past defense strategies along with scenic coastal views near the town of Santa Cruz, which is close to the regional capital, Funchal.
