The Fortress of Acronauplía is the oldest fortified area of Nafplio, rising on a rocky peninsula above the town and overlooking the Argolic Gulf.

Inhabited and fortified since ancient times, it served as the city’s acropolis and played a vital role in controlling one of the most important natural harbors in the Peloponnese. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and modified by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its walls and defenses.

During the medieval period it was divided into separate castle sections, and later the Venetians strengthened it to withstand the growing use of artillery. Today, Acronauplía remains one of Nafplio’s most important historical landmarks. Visitors can explore its surviving fortifications and enjoy panoramic views of the old town, Bourtzi Castle, the sea, and the surrounding landscape while experiencing a site that reflects more than two thousand years of history.
