Fosteau Castle
Thuin, Belgium, Belgium
Fosteau Castle (Château du Fosteau) is a historic fortified manor house in the village of Leers‑et‑Fosteau, in the municipality of Thuin, province of Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium, first built in the 14th century and still standing on a hill above the surrounding meadows under the shadow of the former powerful Abbey of Lobbes.
The ensemble is notable for its seven elegant towers (later reduced or modified but still defining the silhouette), a large polygonal courtyard, a 14th‑century fortified dwelling at the end of that century, and a 17th‑century fortified lower court (basse‑cour) that was re‑worked in the 18th and 19th centuries, all arranged around a central donjon and developed over time by noble families such as the Semousies, Sars, Zwenne, Marotte, Henry, Jamblinne and Aoust.
The castle’s interior is especially famous for the Salle des Chevaliers, regarded as one of the finest Gothic rooms in Belgium, and also contains period furniture, the original donjon, the chamber of General Reille (a Napoleonic officer), and a small “living” museum of pharmacy, while the grounds include a park that has been part of the estate since at least the 18th century.
Since 1979 the castle and its dependencies are classified as a protected monument and from 1980 the building has housed a permanent exhibition of antique furniture, with many pieces available for sale, and it can be visited by the public on guided tours (usually about 1 hour 15 minutes) for a modest fee, though it is closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and major holidays and may sometimes be temporarily inaccessible for renovation work.
