Glarenza Castle

Glarenza Castle is generally associated with the nearby medieval fortress of Chlemoutsi, which was built in the early 13th century to protect the prosperous port city of Glarenza on the northwestern coast of the Peloponnese.

Together with the nearby capital of Andravida, these sites formed the administrative and economic heart of the Frankish Principality of Achaea after the Fourth Crusade. The fortress was constructed by the Crusader ruler Geoffrey I of Villehardouin between 1220 and 1223 and became one of the strongest and best-preserved examples of Frankish military architecture in Greece.

Its hilltop location allowed it to oversee the surrounding plains, coastline, and important maritime routes across the Ionian Sea. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of Franks, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, reflecting the shifting political fortunes of the region. Despite these changes, much of its original structure survived, including its impressive walls, courtyards, and central keep.

Today, the castle is one of Greece’s most significant medieval monuments, valued for its remarkable preservation, rich history, and panoramic views over the western Peloponnese and the Ionian coast.
