Guyana Botanical Gardens
Georgetown, Guyana
The Guyana Botanical Gardens in Georgetown, established in 1877 on the site of an abandoned sugar plantation, is a tropical garden renowned for its diverse collection of plants and trees from Guyana and other tropical regions.
It was developed to support colonial agricultural research and plant introduction and features landscaped grounds with ponds, walkways, and historical elements like the “kissing bridges” from the 1880s. The gardens include a bird sanctuary housing over 200 bird species as well as reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, making it a center for biodiversity in the city.
Over the years, it became a popular recreational and educational space, with the adjoining Guyana Zoo officially opening in 1952. The gardens continue to be a peaceful urban oasis blending natural beauty with cultural heritage, offering visitors nature observation, relaxation, and insight into Guyana’s flora and fauna.
