Ham
France, France
Ham is a small town in the Somme department of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, located near the border with the Aisne department and along the Somme River. It has a population of about 4,400 residents and serves as a local center for the surrounding rural area. The town has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages and was once known for its powerful fortress, the Château de Ham. The castle later served as a state prison and famously held Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, who would become Emperor Napoleon III. Much of the fortress was destroyed during World War I. Ham also developed as an industrial town in the 19th century, although it was heavily affected by wartime destruction and later by industrial decline. Despite these challenges, it has preserved important historical sites and remains an active regional community. Today, visitors are drawn to Ham’s heritage, including the remains of its castle, historic buildings, and its location in the scenic Somme Valley.
