Hamu Al-Qadu Mosque
Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, Yemen
Hamu Al-Qadu Mosque was a historic place of worship in Mosul, a major city in northern Iraq’s Nineveh Governorate. Despite some confusion in records, this mosque was never located in Yemen; it stood in Mosul, Iraq.
The mosque was built in 1881 during the Ottoman era by Abdullah Chalabi, a wealthy merchant. It was an important religious site for the local Sunni Muslim community. The mosque was also known for housing the tomb of Ala al-Din, who was a descendant of the famous Sufi saint, Abdul Qadir al-Jilani.
Hamu Al-Qadu Mosque was notable for its Ottoman architectural style, featuring traditional domes and an elegant prayer hall. The mosque stood in the Al Midan district within central Mosul, an area surrounded by several other historic religious sites.
Like many other landmarks in Mosul, Hamu Al-Qadu Mosque suffered destruction during recent conflicts. In March 2015, the mosque was destroyed by the militant group ISIS, which targeted many of the city’s religious and historic monuments. This act erased not only a religious center but also a part of Mosul’s architectural and cultural heritage.
